Breaking down the 2-Man Challenge Format - Scramble – Shamble and flighting

If you're gearing up for participation in our Two Man Tour tournaments or are exploring the diverse formats available in golf, you've found the right place. We delve into the Scramble, Shamble, and Skins formats - three approaches to enhance your tournament experience.

Scramble: Everyone's Favorite Path to Lower Scores

We kick off with the Scramble, a popular format. In this fun format, each player tees off from each hole, the best of these tee shots is selected, and then all players play their second shots from this spot. This process repeats - selecting the best shot each time, until the ball is in the hole. The Scramble format leverages the strengths of both players, ensuring everyone contributes to the team's success.

Shamble: The Best of Both Worlds

The Shamble format introduces a twist. Like in Scramble, it starts with everyone teeing off and choosing the best drive. However, from that point, each player continues independently, playing their own ball to the hole. The team score on each hole is then determined by the best individual scores. This format offers a balance, allowing players to showcase their skills while still enjoying the strategic advantage of team play.

The Tournament Structure

We play nine holes in a 2-man shamble format and nine holes in a scramble format each day, ensuring a dynamic and varied experience:

  • Day 1: Holes 1-9 in Shamble, Holes 10-18 in Scramble.

  • Day 2: Holes 1-9 in Scramble, Holes 10-18 in Shamble.

A double bogey is the maximum score on all holes, maintaining pace and competitiveness. The final round's back 9 is almost always a Shamble, heightening the pressure and excitement.

Skins: The Thrill of the Chase

Switching gears to the Skins game, where the competitive spirit truly shines and where a little bit of luck can pay off in a big way. Each hole represents a contest in itself, with a "skin" at stake. Secure the lowest score on a hole, and you claim that skin.

Skins games are ideal for those who like competition. It’s a constant feature in our tournament days, ensuring that every round presents an opportunity for a little extra cash.

Flighting: A Level Playing Field

Our tournaments do not require a verified handicap index, supporting amateur golf and promoting fairness. Golfers who are active on any professional tour are not permitted to play and will be disqualified if they sign up to play in the tournament. Flight breakdowns are determined after round one, with 85% or more of the field having a chance to win going into the final round.

We pay out a minimum of 25% of the field at each tournament.

Addressing Sandbagging

Concerns about sandbagging are common among first-time participants. Our "bump rule" is well-regarded and designed to promote fairness: if a team wins their flight by five or more shots, they are bumped up a flight. I should note that this is not, improve their score by five shots. The philosophy is that if a team is 5+ shots better than every team in the flight over 36-holes, they are in the wrong flight. Rarely does it come into play but this does ensure that the competition remains fair.
